Does aspect ratio affect the crop on printed products?

The aspect ratio of a printed photo is defined by the ratio between the width and height of the print, image or screen. It describes how square (1:1) or wide (16:1) an image is. It is important to understand aspect ratio when designing products in the store and approving orders before production.

Prints come in various sizes and some prints may have a smaller aspect ratio than the ratio of your DSLR camera. The most common aspect ratio on a DSLR camera is 3:2. Since the aspect ratio on print sizes varies, cropping the photo is inevitable. Depending on the photo, it may crop off a significant portion of the image.

To limit accidental subject cropping, the client is presented with a warning in the store if the photo is cropped more than 5%. The warning will notify them that their print size is cropped. Pic-Time doesn’t adjust the cropping or size of the image once the order is placed.

Aspect Ratio on Various Print Sizes

Below is an example of how various print sizes would look on one photo. Some of the print sizes would lose a significant part of the subject unless the cropping is adjusted.

Adjust the Crop During Design & Crop Warning

When the order is designed in the store, the cropping can be adjusted for each individual image. Hover over the photo and click Edit.

Adjust the crop of the image and click Done.

Once you click Add to Cart, if the crop is more than 5% of the image, a prompt will remind you to make sure the cropping is properly adjusted. Click Review Images to review the crop or Continue Anyway to proceed to the cart.

Once the item is in your cart, you will need to check-mark I acknowledge photos are being cropped to fit the printed size. The cropping of the photos is not modified once the order is placed. By check-marking the text above you acknowledge that you have reviewed your order.

Reviewing & Approving Orders

1. Before the order is processed, it is important to review it for problematic cropping. You can make changes to an order only while it is 'on hold' before it is sent to production. First, you will want to set-up a hold period in the store. Click Settings from the Main Dashboard.

2. In the Store Settings tab, select the holding period.
