When delivering images to clients, it’s important to make sure you are uploading high-resolution images for downloading and printing. In this article, we will go over Pic-Time’s recommended image resolution, what image resolution means vs dimension, and print resolution vs web resolution.

Image Resolution and Dimension

First, it’s important to know what image resolution means vs dimension and how the two affect each other.

  • Dimension is the total number of pixels along the length and width of an image.

  • Resolution is the number of pixels per inch of an image when printed, known as PPI (pixels per inch) or DPI (dots per inch).

If you change the resolution of an image (PPI/DPI), the dimensions (width and height) will also change in order to maintain the same amount of image data.

Optimal Resolution

When uploading your images to Pic-Time, you will want to export your files at their largest possible image size to allow for more print size options in your store. The optimal resolution is whatever amount of pixels an image needs to be 300 DPI. To calculate the dimensions, multiply 300 by the print size dimensions. For example, the optimal dimensions of a 4x6 print would be 1,200 x 1,800 pixels (4 X 300 = 1,200 and 6 X 300 = 1,800) and the optimal dimensions of an 8x10 print would be 2,400 x 3,000 pixels. Print Resolution and Web Resolution

When uploading your images to Pic-Time, a web-resolution file with smaller image dimensions will automatically be created and uploaded in addition to the high-resolution file. The web-resolution file is uploaded while the high-res files are uploaded in the background so your clients can view their images as quickly as possible. If you allow web-size downloads in your gallery, clients can use the web-size downloads for sharing on social media if they’d like. The web-size files will not be used for printing in your Pic-Time store. Only the high-resolution file will be used for high-res downloads and printing.
